TYPO EDIT FOR TECHNICAL CORRECTIONS
$.009 per word
(ex. 50,000 words x $.009 = $450)
$80 minimum fee
Similar to a proofread, this level of editing is the last step for a manuscript that has been thoroughly worked on and is in its final stages. A Typo Edit for Technical Corrections addresses mechanical errors in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, as well as grammar, tense, and syntax. My goal in typo editing is to ensure that your writing is consistent and correct, that your work is as grammatically flawless and error-free as possible. I make light revisions to incorrect spelling and word choices (there, they’re, or their, or cite, site, or sight), check for proper verb and tense agreement, and note repetitive word use and confusing word order in sentences.
A Typo Edit for Technical Corrections is best for writers in the proofreading stage who have already had their manuscript thoroughly developed and copy edited, and simply need a “fresh pair of eyes” to look over their work before (or even after) publication. This level of editing is ideal for both seasoned and novice writers.
Original story:
She saw the man and he seen her to; and They saw each other at the same time. They were strangers because they don’t know each other. they remmbered eac other anyway
Copy edit:
She saw the man. and He saw her too. and They saw (repetitive word) each other at the same time. They were strangers because they don’t didn’t know each other (don’t need to explain what strangers are). They remembered each other anyway.
COPY EDIT FOR LANGUAGE & VOICE
$.015 per word
(ex. 50,000 words x $.015 = $750)
$105 minimum fee
Along with addressing mechanical errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and syntax, a Copy Edit for Language & Voice focuses on improving sentence structure, word choice, phrasing, and flow, and ensures that your manuscript is coherent and conveys the meaning you intended. This editing involves addressing run-on or confusing sentences, replacing overused and redundant words, adjusting misplaced modifiers, and calling attention to awkward dialogue, unclear exposition, and rough transitions.
The overall goal of a Copy Edit for Language & Voice is to bring to your attention and correct potential line and sentence problems in your content. I also make editor queries and comments throughout the manuscript to seek and suggest clarification regarding main ideas, plot points, and/or characterization as needed. This editing option is best for manuscripts and writings that have already been thoroughly developed and properly structured.
Original story:
She saw the man and he seen her to; and They saw each other at the same time. They were strangers because they don’t know each other. they remmbered eac other anyway
Line edit:
She saw the man at the same time he saw her. to; and They saw each other at the same time. They were strangers, because they don’t know each other. (removed due to redundancy) and yet they both remembered each other. anyway
DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT FOR SUBSTANCE & STRUCTURE
$.03 per word
(ex. 50,000 words x $.03 = $1,500)
$160 minimum fee
A Developmental Edit for Substance & Structure is for writings and manuscripts with content still in the beginning stages. With this level of editing service, only light attention is given to correcting mechanical errors. The primary focus is to refine your manuscript’s overall construction by addressing elements such as characterization, dialogue, narration and description, active versus passive voice, showing versus telling, story progression, and plot and timeline consistency. For creative and informative nonfiction, I work with you to ensure that your topic points follow a logical path, your evidence and arguments support your main thesis, and that your exposition is intelligible and interesting.
A Developmental Edit for Substance & Structure involves removing, reorganizing, and rewriting passages, and is best for works that are still in the preliminary stages of creation and are in need of constructive aid.
Original story:
She saw the man and he seen her to; and They saw each other at the same time. They were strangers because they don’t know each other. they remmbered eac other anyway
Developmental edit:
She (Who is this she?) saw the man and he seen her too; (Where are they? Elaborate on the setting.) and They they saw each other at the same time. (Work on run-on sentences that repeat the same action.) They were strangers because they don’t know each other. (Show readers that they’re strangers, don’t just tell them. Also, watch out for redundancies and overexplaining.) they remembered each other anyway (Is the story being told from the perspective of both characters, or just one of them?)
